Step-by-Step Guide

How to Read Your Human Design Chart

A Human Design chart has many layers. Read them in the order below — from the most foundational to the most nuanced. There's no need to understand everything at once; the system is designed to be explored gradually.

1

Start Here: Your Energy Type

Your Energy Type is the foundation. It tells you what kind of aura you carry and how you're designed to move through the world. There are five types: Generator, Manifesting Generator, Projector, Manifestor, and Reflector. Before reading anything else, read about your type and sit with it. The whole rest of the chart builds on this foundation.

2

Strategy

Each Type has a specific Strategy — a behavioral guideline for how to move through life in alignment with your design. Strategy is practical and immediately applicable. You don't need to understand the whole chart to start experimenting with your Strategy. Human Design teachers often say: if you only ever apply one thing from your chart, make it the Strategy.

3

Inner Authority

Authority is the specific intelligence in your body you're designed to use for decisions. It overrides mental analysis. Your Authority is determined by which centers are defined in a specific hierarchy — Solar Plexus first, then Sacral, then Spleen, and so on. Understanding your Authority is the second most important practical piece of your chart after Type.

4

Profile

Your Profile is derived from the lines of your Personality Sun and Earth gates (e.g., 1/3, 2/4, 5/1). It describes your life theme — the archetypal role you're playing in the world and the kind of learning arc your life follows. There are 12 Profiles, each built from two of the six Lines.

5

Defined & Open Centers

The 9 centers in your body graph are either defined (colored in) or open (white). Defined centers are where you have consistent, reliable energy of a particular type. Open centers are where you take in and amplify the energy of those around you — which means both wisdom (you've experienced many different versions of that energy) and vulnerability to conditioning (taking on others' patterns as your own).

6

Definition

Definition describes how your defined centers connect — or don't. Single Definition means all your defined centers form one connected circuit (you're self-contained). Split Definition means there are two separate islands of defined energy (you're drawn to those who bridge the gap). Triple and Quadruple Split follow the same logic with more islands.

7

Gates & Channels

Below the level of centers are channels (36 in total, each connecting two centers) and gates (64 in total, corresponding to the I Ching hexagrams). Your activated gates are the specific energies you carry consistently. Defined channels create the connections between centers. This is where the chart becomes very individualized — two people can have the same Type and Authority but completely different gate activations.

8

Incarnation Cross

Your Incarnation Cross is formed by four gates: Personality Sun, Personality Earth, Design Sun, and Design Earth. It describes the overarching theme of your life's purpose — not as a goal to pursue, but as an energy field that naturally activates when you live according to your design. Human Design teachers generally advise not to focus on the Cross until you've been experimenting with Strategy and Authority for some time.

Next Steps

Human Design is not meant to be understood all at once. The approach most practitioners recommend: get your chart, focus on Type and Strategy for a few weeks or months, and let the deeper layers reveal themselves as you live the experiment. The system is rich enough that new layers of recognition tend to emerge naturally over time.
