Definition in Human Design
Definition describes how your defined energy centers connect — or don't — within your chart. It determines whether you're energetically self-contained, or whether you naturally draw on other people's energy to feel whole.
What is Definition?
When channels in your chart are activated (both gates of the channel are defined), those channels connect centers. If all your defined centers chain together into one connected network, you have Single Definition. If they form two or more separate islands — clusters of defined centers with gaps between them — you have Split, Triple Split, or Quadruple Split Definition.
The practical difference is significant. Single Definitions are energetically independent — they don't need anyone else's energy to feel integrated. Split and multi-split Definitions are naturally drawn to others who "bridge" their gaps, activating the undefined channels between their islands and allowing their energy to flow as one.

Single Definition
~41% of populationAll defined centers are connected into one continuous circuit.
Single Definition is the most self-contained of the four types. All of your defined centers connect to each other through a continuous chain of channels, meaning your energy flows without interruption across your whole defined circuitry. You don't need other people's energy to "complete" you or bridge any gaps. You have a consistent, reliable sense of self and don't rely on external energy to function. The flip side is that you may be less adaptable than other definitions — your energy pattern is fixed and consistent, which can feel rigid when life asks for flexibility.
Gifts
Consistency, self-sufficiency, a clear and reliable sense of self. You tend to know who you are without needing external confirmation.
Challenges
May be less attuned to how others function; can come across as self-contained in ways that others experience as unavailable or fixed.
Split Definition
~46% of populationTwo separate defined circuits — a bridge is needed to connect them.
Split Definition means your defined centers form two separate groupings — two islands of defined energy with no direct channel between them. You are naturally drawn to people who "bridge" your split (whose defined gates activate the channels that connect your two halves), because in their presence you feel more complete and your energy flows more fully. This makes relationships particularly important to you — not from a place of neediness, but from a genuine energetic truth. In the company of the right people, your decision-making is clearer and your energy is more integrated.
Gifts
A natural openness to and attunement with others. You tend to be more adaptable and relationally intelligent than Single Definitions.
Challenges
Can become dependent on specific people or types to feel whole. Learning to recognize bridging energy (and whether a particular bridge is healthy) is important work.
Triple Split Definition
~11% of populationThree separate defined circuits — you need multiple people to feel fully integrated.
Triple Split Definition has three separate islands of defined energy. Like the Split, you are energetically completed by others — but because you have three separate groups to bridge, a single person rarely does it all. You tend to thrive in communities and social environments where multiple people with different energetic profiles are present. In those contexts you feel more whole and decisive. Alone, you may feel scattered or undefined. Your tendency is to be highly adaptable and socially perceptive, but you can also be susceptible to being influenced by whoever is in the room.
Gifts
Wide social intelligence, adaptability, and the ability to connect across diverse groups. You thrive in communities.
Challenges
Decision-making can feel murky when you're alone or with a group that doesn't bridge all your parts. You may absorb the energy and opinions of those around you more intensely than other definitions.
Quadruple Split Definition
~1% of populationFour separate defined circuits — rare, highly attuned to environment.
Quadruple Split Definition is the rarest type — four separate groupings of defined energy with nothing connecting them directly. Like Triple Splits, you are energetically completed by your environment and community rather than within yourself. You're extraordinarily attuned to the energies around you and thrive in rich, stimulating social contexts. Solitude can feel disorienting. Your decision-making benefits from community sounding boards, and you are at your most integrated when surrounded by diverse, harmonious people.
Gifts
Exceptional environmental sensitivity, social breadth, and the capacity to integrate enormous amounts of diverse energy and perspective.
Challenges
Highly susceptible to conditioning from others; solo decision-making can be unreliable. You need the right environmental conditions to access your full integration.
Open Centers & Conditioning
Wherever you have open (undefined) centers, you receive, amplify, and are conditioned by the energy of people around you. This is not a weakness — open centers are where you have your greatest potential for wisdom, because you have experienced so many different flavors of that center's energy. But they're also where you're most susceptible to conditioning: to taking on others' identities, opinions, and energy as if they were your own.
The practice with open centers is noticing when you're running someone else's energy ("is this mine?") rather than your own, and using what you've taken in as data rather than identity. Your openness is a sampling mechanism — not a deficiency.
